Appendix A: Rules and Regulations
These Rules and Regulations ("Rules") are adopted to better provide for member enjoyment and to ensure that the reputation, character and interest of South Okanagan Motorsports Corporation ("Area 27") and its members are maintained at the highest level.
Area 27 may, in its absolute discretion, make any changes it deems necessary to these Rules and Regulations. Any change will be made in writing and provided to each member via email. Members must ensure that they advise Area 27 of any changes to their email address.
Management
Area 27 personnel have full authority to enforce these Rules and any violations will be reported to management. The management and control of Area 27 is vested in SOMC ("Management"). Management may make, alter or amend the Rules and provide penalties for violations of the Rules. Management may decide on any question as to the meaning or effect of any Rule which decision is final and binding on a member or members as the case may be.
Waivers
Upon entering the Area 27 facility (the facility) all members and their guests are required to sign a release and waiver in a form designed by Area 27. Members are responsible for ensuring each of their guests sign the release and waiver.
Parental Consent
Members and/or guests are required to sign a parental consent waiver for all minors entering the Facility. All minors must be kept under adult supervision at all times.
The age limit to drive on the track is a minimum of 16 years. Any member under the age of 19, with parental consent, may drive as long as they are accompanied by a parent and/or legal guardian. Members under the age of 19 who currently hold a recognized valid competition license, with regional racing experience, do not require an adult to be present in the vehicle. The age limit for the Karting center is a minimum of 10 years of age. Younger persons may be permitted Karting access on an individual basis, at the Karting Manager's absolute discretion.
Guests and Guest Pass Rules
Each category of membership is authorized to bring a specific number of guests to the track, pursuant the conditions outlined below.
- Regular/Charter Members: Fifteen (15) Non-Driving Guests are permitted per calendar month. Members are authorized eight (8) Driving Guest passes per calendar year. The same individual guest may only drive a maximum of three (3) days per calendar year.
- Corporate Member: Forty-five (45) Non-Driving Guests are authorized per calendar month on Open Members' Lapping Days. Corporate Members are authorized twenty-four (24) Driving Guest passes per calendar year. The same individual guest may only drive a maximum of three (3) days per calendar year. Up to four (4) Special Corporate entertainment events may be booked in advance with up to 60 Guests attending and/or driving per event.
Training-course exception: All guests may attend driver/rider training courses through Academy 27 without counting towards the three (3) day limit.
Members are responsible for ensuring each of their Guests read and understand all of the Area 27 "Rules and Regulations" and if driving, meet driver eligibility requirements and pay a daily use fee of $200 + GST. Non-driving Guests are permitted as passengers only with Members classified Intermediate or higher. Members may not advertise guest passes for sale; such action will result in forfeiture of all guest passes. Members are responsible for the conduct of their Guest(s), and it is the Member that will be penalized for a rules infraction committed by their Guest(s).
Management may from time to time limit the maximum number of guests a member can host on any given day or over the course of a membership year and the number of times a particular guest may use Area 27 facilities.
Guest Pass Rules
Member guest passes provide an opportunity for members to entertain friends and associates on a limited basis while at Area 27. Members must be present at the facility at all times their guests are on site. In particular, a member must arrive before or with guests and may not leave the facility prior to their guests.
Guest privileges, described in further detail below, are limited and at no time afford a guest facility access that could otherwise impede or diminish those privileges provided to full members. All driving guests must be approved for lapping a minimum of 24 hours in advance of their attendance and are restricted to a maximum of (3) three visits per calendar year. Late submission of guest driver forms may result in a request for a driving guest to be denied, reduced time on track while waiting for approval and or rejection of application due to full capacity of guest drivers for specified run group. An additional late application charge may apply in the absolute discretion of Area 27.
- Guest forms submitted 24 hours prior to the first on-track session are subject to the $200 guest driver fee. Guest driver forms received within 24 hours or on the day of the first lapping session are subject to a $300 guest driver fee or refusal, all in the absolute discretion of Area 27. Member's guests will have prioritization in the order that the guest forms are submitted to Area 27.
- Guests that do not meet minimum standards, minimum speed requirements, or who are not familiar with the motorsport flag rules will have their track access suspended. The Grid Marshall, or Senior Driving Coach, will have the final word as to whether a driving guest has met these requirements for the run groups of the day. Guest fees will not be refunded to those guests who have had their track access suspended.
- Area 27 Members have session priority over guests of members. Guests may be asked to sit out of a run group session if that run group is considered to be full by the Grid Marshal or Senior Driving Coach. No guest will be granted track access that results in the displacement of a member from their run group.
- The maximum number of guest passes that may be redeemed by a member per day are as follows: weekday (4), weekend (2), member club racing weekend (1).
- The maximum number of guests per run group category on any given day are as follows: Intermediate Production Car 7, Advanced Production Car 7, Open Wheel/Radical 5, Bikes 12; it being understood that guests may be required to sit out a session to accommodate members.
- Guests may have lunch in the Clubhouse provided that they are with their sponsoring members. The members' lockers rooms are for members only and are off-limits to guests of members.
Paddock Transportation and Member Conduct
Paddock Transportation
The use of golf carts, bikes, and scooters is restricted to the roadways and paddock areas only and limited to a maximum speed of 20kph. These vehicles are not permitted in the pit area, track or unpaved areas at any time. Children under the age of 16 are not permitted to operate any such vehicle anywhere on the Facility.
All two-wheel motorized vehicles used in the facility require the use of a helmet at all times.
Member Conduct
Any member whose conduct or whose guest's conduct is deemed by Management to likely endanger the welfare, safety, harmony or good reputation of Area 27 and/or its members ("Improper Conduct"), may be reprimanded, fined, suspended or expelled from Area 27 and have all or some privileges associated with the membership suspended or terminated by Management. Management shall, in its sole and absolute discretion, determine Improper Conduct, but Improper Conduct includes, without limitation:
- Abusing Area 27 employees, contractors, suppliers and/or sponsors, verbally or otherwise.
- Acting in a manner which would reasonably cause sponsors or potential sponsors to withdraw member benefits or support of Area 27.
- Using of the Facility in a manner which interferes with other members' access or enjoyment of the Facility.
- Requesting special personal services from employees of Area 27 or the personal use of Area 27's furnishing or equipment which are not ordinarily available for use by all members, unless prior express written permission has been obtained by Management.
- Soliciting members, guests, visitors, or Area 27 personnel for business without the prior express written permission of Management.
- Conducting personal or other business on Area 27 property without the prior express written permission of Management.
- Acting in any manner which is contrary to any municipal, provincial or federal law.
- Possessing, using or being under the influence of cannabis or any illicit drug anywhere on Area 27 property.
- Possessing, using or being under the influence of alcohol or prescription drugs (which may cause impairment) on the track or in the paddock. Members may not bring alcoholic beverages or cannabis to the Facility.
Driver Conduct and Track Operations
Driver Conduct
- Each member must inspect their vehicle at the start of the day to ensure it is in good operating condition for track use.
- All active cell phones, mobile devices, pagers, etc. are strictly forbidden during any on track session, including the pit lane, both on ones' person or within the vehicle for both drivers and their passengers. Vehicle "Bluetooth" or "hands free" systems must be turned off or disabled prior to any track session. Cell phones may be used in the paddock area but not the pit lane or defined pit box area.
- The use of video recording equipment is allowed and even encouraged providing that such equipment is rigidly mounted to the vehicle in a safe location. Should the recording device be mounted on the exterior of the vehicle, it must be accompanied by a tether and is subject to inspection. Helmet cams are not allowed and at no time may any device, of any type, be hand held during any on-track session. Exterior-mounted cameras are not permitted during an Academy 27 program.
- The use of cell phone apps for data logging or video recording is permitted only if the phone is rigidly mounted to the vehicle subject to inspection.
- Never enter the track without authorization from the Senior Driving Instructor or Grid Marshal. The Senior Driving Instructor or Grid Marshal will find an open spot on the track to allow you to enter safely.
- Each time entering the track the driver should start with a few "warm up" laps. This will allow time to get the feel for the car and track conditions and allow tires and fluids to reach optimal operating temperatures.
- At the end of each session or the lap prior to exiting the track the driver should do a "cool down" lap. This will allow the vehicles cooling systems an opportunity to cool the engine and brakes prior to the vehicle being shut off in the pits, thus preventing damage to the vehicle. NOTE: Never apply the park brake to a vehicle that has just completed a track session.
- Each time a driver exits the track, for any reason, they are required to signal other drivers their intention by using their right turn indicator (if equipped), or by holding their arm clearly out the window (production car), above the roll bar (race car), or holding their arm up as to clearly indicate their intentions to exit the track.
- When exiting the circuit, drivers and riders must wear a securely fastened helmet until the vehicle is stopped or turned off in the designated pit or paddock area.
Track Direction
The track direction is counter clockwise, and the configuration designated on the events calendar may be subject to change at SOMC management's discretion, or at the sole discretion of the Senior Driving Instructor or Grid Marshal.
A Senior Driving Instructor or Grid Marshal will be in charge of controlling track activities. This will include the division of run groups, track entry and exit protocol, passing protocols, and monitoring of track conditions during each track session. Each Member will follow the direction given by the Senior Driving Instructor or Grid Marshal during their time at the track. The Senior Driving Instructor or Grid Marshal shall have final word as to when and who is allowed on the track.
Sound Limits
The maximum permissible sound limit is 103.0 decibels for cars and 97 decibels for motorcycles. The sound is measured at fifty (50) feet during full throttle acceleration. Any vehicle found to be over this limit (confirmed by 2 tests) or lifting the throttle, will not be allowed to run until sound attenuation modifications are made.
Vehicles
Only the owner (and/or guest, if the owner is present) of the vehicle is eligible to drive on the circuit or if participating in an Academy 27 driving school. If the owner of the vehicle is not present but still wishes to have a friend or family member drive their vehicle, they must notify Area 27 staff as to who is authorized to drive within forty-eight (48) hours prior to the selected track day. It is the discretion of the vehicle owner as to who is allowed to drive the vehicle, providing that driver meets all mandatory driver eligibility requirements.
It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to ensure that their vehicle is in good repair with maintenance suitable for track use. Area 27 staff may from time to time request an inspection of the vehicle to ensure suitability for track use. If a vehicle is found not to be suitable for track use, it is the responsibility of the owner, or proxy, to facilitate the approved vehicle modifications or repairs in order to re-insure track use suitability. All incidents involving damage to vehicles on the Area 27 property will be reported, investigated, and documented by Area 27 staff and members will fully cooperate with Area 27 staff in this regard. SOMC management will retain documents relating to vehicle incidents or damages. SOMC management may decide to make these documents and findings available to outside parties, on a case-by-case basis, at its sole discretion.
Public Roadway Conduct of Members
- Any Member convicted of impaired driving while on public roadways will be subject to a six (6) month suspension of membership privileges for a first offence. Second or Third offences may result in membership termination at the absolute discretion of the Area 27.
- Any Member found guilty of street racing within a municipality by a court of law will have their memberships suspended for a period of up to one (1) year for a first offence. Any member convicted of causing an accident resulting serious injury or death on a public roadway and who was found to have been driving in an unsafe manner, will have their membership terminated.
- Any Member that publicly drives in a manner deemed harmful either financially or to the reputation of the 'Membership' or 'Area 27' can face suspension of membership.
Area 27 was created to provide Members with a safe and exciting place to drive their cars and hone their skills, and entertain their friends and business associates with an exclusive and exhilarating experience. The "Rules and Regulations" of this document are intended to promote a safe environment for all members and guests to enjoy exciting motorsport activities. However, it being understood that motorsport activities can be dangerous and may result in serious injury or death.
Damage to Asphalt
Anchor all canopies by a weight method only. No holes in the paved areas are permitted. Each Member is responsible for fuelling their own vehicles in the designated refueling area. Any damage in other areas caused by fuel spillage will be charged to the Member. If any oil or fuel is spilled the Member must immediately notify the nearest Area 27 staff member so that it can be cleaned up. A clean up fee may be charged depending upon the size of the spill.

If the Member continues to drive in an unsafe manner they will be required to sit out a session at the absolute discretion of the senior driving instructor or grid marshal.
Drifting, Doughnuts, and Burnouts
High slip angle drifting or doughnuts are permitted only at the car control center during a specified event and are not permitted on the Area 27 circuit (it's the slow way around anyways). Burnouts or brake stands are strictly prohibited and may result in suspension of driving privileges. Drivers are responsible for all Area 27 repair costs associated with prohibited driving.
Private Instruction
Private instruction by highly skilled racing drivers is available by appointment to all members and their guests subject to prior arrangement with SOMC management or Academy 27 driving school. Fees will apply.
Passing Rules (Lapping Days)
Passing is permitted in designated areas with a point-by from the driver. All members are required to monitor their mirrors and as faster cars approach, they must stay on line and clearly point by the passing vehicle without abruptly slowing their vehicle. The left turn indicator is the preferred method if the vehicle is so equipped. It is the responsibility of the passing car to make a safe and clean pass and the pass must be completed prior to the braking zone of the approaching corner. Passing is permitted in corners during club-racing events.
Passing Zones
- These passing rules apply to all Member Lapping sessions.
- Passing is ONLY on the left side at Area 27 in all passing zones.
- You may only pass a car in front of you that has given you a point by signal.
- The signal to allow a car to pass is with the left indicator light. In the case of not having functional side indicator lights, you must use your arm out the window pointing left.
- The pass must be completed before the braking zone of the next corner.
- If both cars cannot safely complete the passing procedure in current passing zone, they should wait until the next passing zone.
The passing zones are: Turn 1-2, Turn 3-4 (used with caution), Turn 7-8, Turn 12-13, and Turn 16-1 (watch for cars entering track).
The grid marshal reserves the right to amend the passing zones.
Dropping Wheels and Spins
- If a driver drops two (2) wheels off the edge of the track the driver must finish off the rest of the lap at a "cool down" pace and return to the pit or paddock area. Either the Senior Driving Instructor or Grid Marshal along with the driver will inspect the vehicle for damage and if necessary, may require the car be sent to the paddock for a more detailed inspection prior to returning to the track.
- If a driver drops all four (4) wheels off the track and/or spins they are required to safely return to the track and continue at a "cool down" pace on the off-line to the pits or paddock for a meeting with the Senior Driving Instructor or Grid Marshal.
- For any spins that occur without leaving the track surface, the driver is required to use caution and remain aware of other vehicles on the track and return to the pits or paddock for a meeting with the Senior Driving Instructor or Grid Marshal.
- If a driver has a mechanical failure such as engine, transmission or brake problems etc. they are required to pull off the track and proceed to the nearest "safe" area. At the Senior Driving Instructor or Grid Marshal's absolute discretion the session may be "red flagged" and the vehicle will be inspected and/or returned to the paddock area before the session resumes.
- If a driver leaves the racing surface for any reason, and is unable to return to the pit area, they must remain in their vehicle with their safety belts fastened. The exception to this rule is if the vehicle is on fire.
Safety Equipment
All drivers and passengers are required to use a Snell approved helmet. SA2010 are permitted for lapping. January 2027 will require SA2015 or later and all helmets must have the "Area 27 approved" sticker before entering the track to drive.
Proper closed toe driving shoes, or shoes similar to a volleyball or 'Puma/Piloti' style are required for all drivers and passengers.
For full circuit use, open cockpit vehicles including convertibles require factory roll over protection. Vehicles that have a roll bar securely mounted to the vehicle chassis are also permitted on the full circuit. Convertibles without any roll over protection are strictly prohibited.
It is further recommended that drivers at the 'Intermediate' driving level or higher, or are driving non street legal race only vehicles, have a minimum 1 layer driving suit and gloves.
The driver and passenger must use equal seat belts. If the driver has a 4-5-6 point fixed harness, the passenger must also. If the passenger only has a 3 point OEM belt, the driver must also use the 3 point OEM belt.
It is VERY strongly recommended that all drivers and or passengers using 4-5-6 point fixed harness belts also use an approved head and neck restraint system.
Motorcycle Rules
Rider Qualifications and Track Experience
Area 27 requires Members or guests to have prior track experience including a minimum requirement of a Full Class 6 License or SOMC Approved Race License before riding on Members Lapping Days. Riders can meet the requirements by completion of any one of the four requirements listed below.

- Having ridden more than 10 days in the beginner group at Area 27 or other racetracks.
- If a rider has ridden less than 10 days in the beginner group, prior on-track instruction from a recognized school is required.
If riders do not meet the requirements above, they must take a school or receive an on-track evaluation from Area 27.
Notwithstanding the above, a minimum lap time is required to manage the speed differential between faster and slower riders. This lap time may change depending on the speed of other riders in attendance from day to day and is up to the discretion of the person working the Grid.
Riders Meeting
All new riders and guests are required to attend the morning drivers / riders meeting.
Motorcycle Requirements
- Minimum 250cc 4-stroke or 125cc 2-stroke.
- Harley Davidson or Honda Goldwing types of bikes are not permitted.
- Three-wheeled bikes are not permitted.
Cameras
Cameras securely mounted to the bike are permitted. Cameras are not permitted to be worn on the rider's helmet or chest mounted to the leathers.
Track Entry and Exit Procedures
- For track entry, riders must be cleared onto the track by the grid marshal. Riders must stay to the right of the blend line and must stay to the far-right side of the track through turn 1. Do not apex turn 1 on the outlap.
- When exiting, riders must stay to the far-right between turns 12 and 13 with their hand up and stay to the far-right side of the track through turns 13 and 14.
Passing Rules
- Pass for the other riders' comfort, not yours.
- If the rider being passed needs to adjust their line to avoid the passing rider, it was not a good pass.
- Minimum 2 meters between riders when passing.
- Avoid passes that put the riders on converging lines. Try to make the pass when lines are diverging.
- Avoid last second passes on the inside on the brakes when entering a corner.
- It is the responsibility of the passing rider to safely negotiate the pass on the slower rider.
Erratic Riding
- If a rider runs off track three times in the same day, they are done for the day. If a rider runs off track, they must re-enter in an area where they can be easily seen by other riders. If a rider rides off the track, they must report to the grid for a bike inspection.
- Stunting (intentional wheelies and stoppies) are not permitted.
- If a rider crashes, they must self assess for injuries and bike damage. If one is injured, they must stay down and wait for assistance. If there is no injury, walk out of the impact zone to a safe area and wait for assistance. If one's bike can be ridden in, inspect it in advance to ensure all the controls are functioning safely and the bike is not leaking fluids before rejoining the track. Riders must then report to the grid for a bike inspection.
General Bike Rules
- Two up rides/doubling are not permitted.
- Riders must notify the grid if they plan to do lead follow for track orientation purposes.

Appendix E: Passing Zones Illustrated
