Designing Area 27

Area 27 began as an idea on raw South Okanagan land: build a private motorsports circuit that felt alive from the first braking zone to the final run back to the straight. With Jacques Villeneuve involved in the design, the track was shaped around rhythm, elevation, visibility, bravery, and the simple truth that a great lap should be memorable every time.

From land to line

The track was designed around what the land wanted to do.

Area 27 does not feel like a flat layout dropped onto a property. The corners use the terrain, and the terrain gives the lap its personality.

The story starts before there was pavement. The first design challenge was to look at the land around Oliver, British Columbia and imagine where a car would naturally want to accelerate, brake, turn in, crest, compress, and breathe. A track can be drawn on a screen, but a circuit that drivers remember has to work with the ground underneath it.

Jacques Villeneuve's role matters because a racing driver sees a site differently. A driver is not only looking for a sequence of corners. He is feeling where the car will be loaded, where the driver will need trust, where an apex can be revealed late, where a straight should reward a clean exit, and where a corner can be fun without becoming artificial.

That thinking shows up everywhere at Area 27. The lap has hidden apexes, blind entries, fast direction changes, a banked feature corner, hard braking zones, and places where the track rises or falls just enough to make the driver commit. The design is technical, but it is not technical for the sake of being difficult. The goal is flow, challenge, and repeatability: a circuit members can keep learning for years.

Read the property

The team started with the natural contours, sight lines, grades, and available space. The route needed to respect the land while creating moments where elevation and visibility would become part of the driving experience.

Shape the rhythm

Each corner had to connect to the next. A good circuit is not sixteen isolated turns, it is one sentence. The exit of one corner sets up the braking, speed, and confidence for the next one.

Build in character

The design includes blind entries, dips, climbs, hard braking zones, and a banked 11 degree Turn 7. These are the details that make Area 27 feel handcrafted instead of generic.

Why the layout works

A lap built from contrasts.

A long main straight leads into a Turn 1 braking zone where the apex is intentionally not visible at first.
Fast sweepers are balanced by heavy-braking hairpins, so the lap rewards both courage and discipline.
Elevation is used as a design tool, including uphill entries, downhill exits, dips, and blind approaches.
The circuit has places to attack and places to savor, especially Turn 7, a banked corner designed to be enjoyed as much as optimized.

Design priorities

The process was about emotion, safety, and repeatable challenge.

A private motorsports circuit has to be exciting on lap one, but it also has to keep giving drivers new lessons after lap one hundred.

Area 27's design process had to balance many jobs at once. The track needed to feel fast, but not flat-out everywhere. It needed corners that teach patience, corners that reward precision, and corners that make drivers smile before they even look at a lap time. It also needed the practical parts of a real facility: clear pit entry and exit, logical runoff planning, consistent sight lines where they matter most, and a surface that could serve members, instructors, events, and high performance cars.

That is why the lap changes personality. The main straight gives the car room to stretch. Turn 1 immediately asks for trust. Turn 2 carries speed. Turn 3 slows the car down. Turns 4 and 5 blend into one long commitment. Turn 7 becomes the feature piece. Later, the circuit keeps mixing blind entries, sweepers, hairpins, and the fast Turn 13 so the driver never settles into a lazy rhythm.

Elevation as a feature

The climbs, dips, blind entries, and downhill exits are not accidents. They are part of the circuit's identity, giving drivers sensation through the seat as much as through the steering wheel.

Technical without being awkward

The sequence asks for braking accuracy, late apex patience, throttle timing, and line discipline. It is technical, but the corners still flow into one another.

Built for learning

A driver can improve here in layers. First comes the basic line, then the braking references, then carrying speed through blind and loaded sections, then linking the entire lap cleanly.

Memorable signatures

Turn 1's hidden apex, the Turn 4 and 5 dip, the 11 degree banking of Turn 7, and the Turn 13 comparison to Suzuka's 130R give the circuit landmarks drivers talk about after the session.

Turning the drawing into a race track

Once the layout was set, the design had to become earthwork, grading, base preparation, drainage, and asphalt. This is where the idea became physical. The build needed to preserve the elevation changes and blind approaches that made the design special, while giving the finished circuit the surface, width, consistency, and durability required for repeated high performance driving.

Let's take a lap

What it feels like from behind the wheel.

Turn 1

Exiting the pits onto the main straightaway, the apex of Turn 1 is not visible because there is a gentle drop off in the braking zone. It is there on purpose, and it makes the corner technical, exciting, and deeply satisfying when you get the timing right.

Turns 2-3

After the long straightaway comes Turn 2, a fast sweeper that keeps speed in the car and asks for confidence. Next is Turn 3, almost a full hairpin, which changes the tempo and demands a disciplined braking and rotation phase.

Turns 4-5

Turns 4 and 5 are basically one long corner when taken at speed. There is a wonderful dip in the middle where the apex of Turn 5 goes out of sight for a moment, a very cool feature that makes the car feel alive through the section.

Turns 6-7

Turn 6 leads to an uphill entry for the spectacular Turn 7. Turn 7 is banked 11 degrees and has a downhill exit, which means it has an uphill entry and downhill exit in one flowing feature. It is not really a corner where time is made up during a lap. It is a corner to be enjoyed and savoured, a true work of art.

Turns 8-11

Turns 8 and 9 are opposing 90 degree corners, with Turn 9 having an uphill and blind entry. They are great racing corners because they make positioning and timing matter. Turn 10 is a sweeper and leads to the deceivingly fun Turn 11, which has a blind entry and straightens out sooner than anticipated.

Turns 12-13

Turn 12 is a full hairpin that requires hard braking on entry. Then the track opens into Turn 13, an ultra fast corner reminiscent of the famous 130R at Suzuka, a place where confidence, commitment, and a settled car all matter.

Turns 14-16

Turn 14 is another hairpin and features track exit on the outside. A good line through Turn 15 sets up nicely for Turn 16 and the drive down the main straightaway, where the lap begins again and the whole circuit starts asking new questions.

The finished Area 27 circuit feels intentional because it was designed as an experience, not just a route. It uses the land, asks drivers to keep learning, and gives each part of the lap a job. Some corners are about lap time. Some are about discipline. Some are simply about the joy of driving a well-shaped piece of pavement.

That is the heart of Area 27's track design: a 4.83 km, 16 turn circuit where Jacques Villeneuve's racing perspective helped turn a raw property into a place with rhythm, challenge, and character.
